FAQs on How to Sell Your Car in Hungary

No. A valid Műszaki Vizsga certificate is not required to list your vehicle on CarAgencia EU.

However, Hungarian buyers generally expect a vehicle to have a current technical inspection. Vehicles with a valid Műszaki Vizsga are often perceived as lower-risk purchases and may receive more competitive offers.

When selling a used car in Hungary as a private individual, you generally do not pay VAT or government transfer fees.

The tax treatment usually depends on whether you make a profit from the sale:

1.  If you sell the car for less than or the same amount as you originally paid, no personal income tax is usually due.

2.  If you make a profit on the sale, the gain may be subject to 15% personal income tax (SZJA), although a tax-free allowance for movable property sales may apply.

If the vehicle is owned by a business, the sale may be subject to:

1.  27% VAT.

2.  9% corporate income tax on any profit.

3.  Company car tax obligations up to the month of sale.

Regardless of who sells the vehicle, both parties should complete a sales contract with the exact transfer date and time.

The seller should also report the sale to the authorities within 15 days to avoid liability for any future fines or penalties associated with the vehicle.

In Hungary, whether you need a residency permit to sell a car depends on your citizenship and registration status.

1.  EU/EEA citizens can generally sell a Hungarian-registered vehicle using their passport and proof of address, without needing a residency permit.

2.  Non-EU citizens typically need a valid residence permit, along with a Hungarian address card and tax ID, to complete the ownership transfer.

If the car is registered in Hungary, the sale must be recorded in the national vehicle registry, and both parties must have their official details on file.

For foreign-plated vehicles, the buyer may need to complete local registration procedures, while exported vehicles can often be sold using temporary export or transit plates.

Professional assistance is often recommended to ensure all legal and administrative requirements are met.

Yes. Mandatory third-party liability insurance (KGFB) is required for all registered vehicles in Hungary, including vehicles being sold.

The vehicle must remain insured until the ownership transfer is officially completed, as continuous insurance coverage is a legal requirement.

To complete the sale:

1.  The seller and buyer should sign a sales agreement.

2.  The ownership change should be reported to the relevant authorities.

3.  Once the transfer is registered, the seller can cancel their insurance policy.

4.  The buyer must arrange new insurance coverage for the vehicle.

Yes. A valid periodic technical inspection is generally required to sell and transfer ownership of a car in Hungary.

The vehicle must have a current roadworthiness inspection recorded in its registration documents so the ownership transfer can be completed and the car registered in the buyer’s name.

For passenger cars, the usual inspection schedule is:

1.  The first inspection is typically valid for 4 years.

2.  After that, inspections are usually required every 2 years.

After passing the inspection, the vehicle receives a roadworthiness certificate, which serves as proof that it meets the legal requirements for transfer and road use.

CarAgencia allows buyers and sellers to connect across multiple European countries.

However, the platform does not currently provide a managed cross-border transaction, export, or import service.

Buyers and sellers are responsible for complying with the registration, taxation, import, export, and ownership transfer requirements applicable in their countries.

CarAgencia facilitates communication between buyers and sellers but does not complete ownership transfers on behalf of users.

Buyers and sellers are responsible for completing all ownership transfer and registration requirements according to local regulations.
