Sell Your Car Online in Czech Republic

FAQs on How to Sell Your Car in Czech Republic

No. A valid Technická kontrola (STK) is not required to create a listing on CarAgencia EU.

However, because STK status is an important part of the vehicle transfer and registration process in the Czech Republic, buyers often pay close attention to its validity.

A vehicle with a recently completed STK may attract more interest and stronger offers.

When selling a car in the Czech Republic as a private individual, you generally do not pay income tax or VAT on the sale of your personal vehicle.

The main administrative cost is the 800 CZK ownership transfer fee, which is legally shared between the buyer and seller but is commonly paid by the buyer unless otherwise agreed.

If the vehicle's technical inspection (STK) has expired, a new inspection may be required, costing around 2,300 CZK.

For business-owned vehicles, different rules apply:

  1. The sale may be subject to 21% VAT if VAT was previously deducted.
  2. The proceeds may be taxable as business income.
  3. Older vehicles that do not meet at least Euro 3 emissions standards may incur an environmental fee of 3,000 – 10,000 CZK.

This environmental fee is paid by the buyer upon re-registration, not by the seller.

In the Czech Republic, a valid temporary or permanent residence permit is generally required to complete the legal transfer of a registered vehicle.

Foreign buyers typically cannot register a car in their name using only a passport or tourist visa, so residency documentation is usually needed during the ownership transfer process.

To complete the sale, the vehicle must first pass an Evidence Check (Evidenční kontrola).

After that, the buyer and seller complete the ownership transfer at the Vehicle Registry.

Required documents generally include:

  1. Passport or valid identification
  2. Residence permit, where applicable
  3. Vehicle registration certificates
  4. Signed purchase agreement
  5. Evidence Check certificate

If either party cannot attend in person, a notarized power of attorney may be used.

Yes. In the Czech Republic, third-party liability insurance (povinné ručení) must remain active until the vehicle's ownership is officially transferred to the buyer.

As long as the car is registered in the seller’s name, it is legally required to be insured. Cancelling the policy too early may result in penalties.

After the sale, the seller should provide the vehicle documents and proof of insurance to the buyer so the ownership transfer can be completed.

Once the transfer is officially registered, the seller can cancel their insurance policy and typically receive a refund for any unused premium.

The buyer must arrange their own insurance to register and legally operate the vehicle.

In the Czech Republic, a valid technical inspection (STK) is not strictly required to sign a vehicle sales contract.

However, it is essential for the vehicle to be legally driven and registered by the new owner. As a result, having a valid STK is practically necessary when selling a car for normal road use.

Ownership transfer also requires an Evidence Control (Evidenční kontrola), which verifies that the vehicle's details match its registration documents.

To complete the transfer, the buyer and seller generally need:

  1. Purchase contract
  2. Vehicle registration documents
  3. Proof of valid insurance
  4. STK certificate, where applicable
  5. Evidence Control certificate

Yes, but there are important steps to follow.

A car with outstanding finance means the lender technically has a financial interest in the vehicle.

Before completing the sale, you should:

  1. Contact your lender to confirm the exact settlement figure.
  2. Settle the loan before the sale or arrange for the sale proceeds to clear it at the point of transaction.
  3. Ensure the buyer receives a clear, lien-free title upon handover.

We recommend being transparent about this in your listing.

Buyers appreciate honesty, and it helps avoid complications during the ownership transfer process.

Your safety is a priority at CarAgencia.

Here’s how we help — and what you should do:

  1. Use our Message Centre exclusively for all communication.
  2. Never share your personal phone number or email with buyers.
  3. Never accept overpayment offers, where a buyer sends more than the asking price and asks for a refund.
  4. Only accept verified, cleared payment before handing over keys and documents.
  5. Avoid cash-equivalent transfers that cannot be traced.
  6. Meet in safe, public locations for viewings and test drives.
  7. Always verify the buyer's ID.
  8. Do not hand over documents until full payment is confirmed.

CarAgencia's built-in messaging, calling, and offer management system is designed to keep your personal information protected throughout the entire process.
